If you swiped your card at the Orchard Pool gate this weekend and got nothing but a blank beep, that's not a glitch. The Cherry Creek Vista Park and Recreation District closed the pool for the season on Sunday, September 13, after opening it back on May 22. Eighteen weeks of lap swim, pool parties, and Vikings swim team meets against the Rocky Mountain Swim League, done for the year.
It's tempting to treat that as the moment Cherry Creek Vista's outdoor season ends. It isn't. The pool follows its own calendar, and almost nothing else in the neighborhood follows it too. The date that actually deserves a spot on your calendar isn't September 13. It's four days from today, and it involves the one place most CCV dog owners visit more often than the pool.
The Closure That Actually Changes Your Weekend
Cherry Creek State Park's Dog Off-Leash Area, the 107-acre fenced stretch where Cherry Creek itself runs through the grass and dogs go in the water without a leash in sight, closes for maintenance this week. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife's current park notice, the DOLA is shut all day this Friday, September 18, and doesn't reopen until 2 p.m. Saturday, September 19.
That's a narrower window than the pool's closure, but it hits differently. The pool is a summer amenity you knew was going to end eventually. The DOLA is a year-round habit, the place people default to on a Saturday morning without thinking twice, entered either from the south at Parker and Orchard roads or from the north at 12 Mile North. It's normally open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week, no seasonal shutdown, which is exactly why a two-day closure catches regulars off guard when they show up and find the gate locked.
If your Saturday morning already has "dog park" written on it, this is the week to have a backup. A few things worth knowing before you go:
- Entry requires both a park pass and a separate DOLA pass. Colorado Parks and Wildlife lists the DOLA daily pass at $3, on top of the standard park entry fee, or $25 for an annual pass covering one handler and up to three dogs.
- The closure is specifically the fenced off-leash area, not the surrounding 12 Mile Trail and Cherry Creek Loop, which stays open on-leash during the maintenance window.
- Reopening at 2 p.m. Saturday means the closure eats the entire morning rush, historically the busiest stretch for the DOLA on any given Saturday.
What Didn't Get the Memo
Here's where the pool's closure starts to look less like an ending and more like one line item on a longer list, most of which stays untouched. CCVPRD's seven tennis courts and single pickleball court don't come with a posted end date the way Orchard Pool does. They run on a keyed membership system, last rekeyed in August 2024, and there's nothing on the district's site suggesting they close for winter the way the pool physically does. The district's Junior Team Tennis program wrapped its organized practice season in mid-July, but that's a scheduling choice for the youth league, not a facility shutdown. The courts themselves keep working into fall.
The same goes for the district's six parks and six playgrounds, four of which carry names locals actually use: Lakeview Park, Orchard Park, Peakview Park, and Sunrise Vista Park. None of them are gated behind a swim season.

The Marina Runs on the Reservoir's Clock, Not the Beach's
Speaking of water: the reservoir's roped-off swim beach and bathhouse closed for the season on Labor Day, September 7, which is the same rule that governs beaches at state parks across the region. That's a hard stop, sand and lifeguards packed up until next summer.
Paddleboarding is a separate question. Rocky Mountain Paddleboard's main rental counter operates out of the Lake House building inside the marina, a different footprint from the roped swim beach entirely. During peak season the outfitter also runs a second rental trailer near the swim beach itself, which almost certainly follows the beach's own calendar. The marina-based counter is the one worth a phone call if you're hoping to get on the water later this month. Nothing in the park's public information says the marina location shuts down the same day the beach does, but the smart move is calling ahead rather than assuming the whole reservoir went quiet with the sand.
Where the Fall Pivot Actually Goes
If the pool, the beach, and now the DOLA are all off the table for a stretch, Cherry Creek State Park still has one option that runs on neither the water's schedule nor the district's. 12 Mile Stables, inside the park, offers horse rentals, hay rides, day camps, and riding lessons, and none of that reads as a summer-only operation the way the swim beach does. It's the kind of fall-friendly activity that doesn't care whether the pool card works or the dog park gate is locked for the weekend.
Put together, the pool closing on September 13 and the DOLA closing September 18 through 19 aren't the same kind of event, even though they landed five days apart. One is the scheduled end of a season everyone saw coming in May. The other is a short, specific interruption to something that otherwise runs all year, and it's the one actually worth checking your calendar for before Friday morning.
That's the general shape of living in Cherry Creek Vista in September: less a hard seasonal switch and more a set of overlapping calendars, water on one clock, courts and parks on another, the state park's dog area on its own maintenance rhythm entirely.
